The collaborative robot market is dominated by six-axis robots, or six-degree-of-freedom (DoF) robots, as they might otherwise be called. Representatives of this group include Universal Robots, Doosan, Auba, Hanwha, Omron TM, Techman Robot, or others. A generational leap ahead of them are cobots, which have seven degrees of freedom. Exactly as many as a human arm. Sounds good, but what does this mean in practice for production efficiency?

He is an entrepreneur, manager and above all a designer, responsible for groundbreaking projects in the field of robotics. Among others, together with Esben Østergaard and Kasper Støy, he founded and developed Universal Robots, then at SoftBank Robotics he led the project to build the humanoid “Romeo,” and in 2014 he began construction work on his own series of collaborative robots, Kassow Robots.

Collaborative robot or cobot are all interchangeable names for one, but all the time growing family of robots, not only with industrial applications. In this article we will focus on defining this category of devices looking from a technical-normative point of view.

Will robots replace humans? Will they take away jobs? Looking through the press and portals dedicated to technologies of the future, one can get the impression that, lo and behold, soon we will all be replaced by intelligent machines, automation processes, or artificial intelligence. Industrial robots are leading the way in this defeatism, followed closely by collaborative robots. The latter are bringing the possibility of automation to micro and small businesses as well, and will soon overtake their larger industrial brethren in terms of scope of implementation.

Our collaborative robots are extremely fast and powerful while maintaining their long reach. Their small size allows them to be used in confined spaces or in areas where the use of a robot was previously not possible. Thanks to the ease of programming (dragging blocks on a touchscreen tablet), now also small and medium-sized companies are able to achieve complex levels of automation economically and without having to hire very expensive specialists.
